Kuhane Impact Suit: When and Why to Use It

The Kuhane Impact Suit is the ultimate active protection gear. It is not a cold-water wetsuit — it is a suit designed to absorb impacts in disciplines where the body frequently comes into contact with the board, the bottom, or the waves.

What is an impact suit and what is it for?

An impact suit (or impact vest) has high-density foam panels strategically placed in areas most exposed to impacts. In the Kuhane, these panels are on the chest and contact areas, absorbing the energy of the impact before it reaches the body.

What activities is it designed for?

  • Bodyboarding: the body is constantly on the board — impacts to the chest and ribs are frequent.
  • Reef breaks: in coral or rock bottoms, a fall can cause direct impact. The suit reduces the severity.
  • Big waves: the impact of a 3+ meter wave can be equivalent to a physical fall. The panels absorb part of that energy.
  • Learning to surf: beginners fall more — the impact suit reduces the fear of contact with the board.

Protection vs. mobility?

The Kuhane's design solves this dilemma with highly flexible neoprene and an ergonomic cut that does not restrict arm or shoulder movement. The impact panels are on the torso — the area that needs the least mobility in surfing. There is no compromise on paddling or maneuvers.

Alone or combined with neoprene?

Depends on water temperature:

  • Water above 18°C: the Impact Suit alone is sufficient. It has quick-drying and muscle compression.
  • Water between 14°C and 18°C: combine it with a shorty or long-sleeve rash guard underneath.
  • Water below 14°C: wear it over a full wetsuit — the Impact Suit goes on top as an additional protective layer.

Muscle compression and quick-drying

In addition to protection, the suit offers two functional benefits:

  • Muscle compression: structural support during the session that reduces fatigue in the abs and lower back.
  • Quick-drying: out of the water and dry in minutes — ideal for competitions or multiple sessions in one day.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Impact Suit suitable for stand-up surfing? Yes, especially in reef breaks or for surfers who want extra protection. It does not replace neoprene in cold water.

What size should I use? Consult the Kuhane size guide — same criteria as for a wetsuit. It should fit snugly without compressing breathing.

How long does it last? The impact panels maintain their absorption capacity for 3-4 seasons with regular use.

Can it be machine washed? No. Rinse with cold water after each use, dry in the shade.
