Water temperature in Chile: which wetsuit you need
The Humboldt Current keeps the Chilean Pacific cold all year, even in summer. Knowing the water temperature in your area is the simplest way to choose the right wetsuit.
Approximate temperature by area
| Area | Water temperature |
|---|---|
| North (Arica–Coquimbo) | The mildest in the country, especially in summer |
| Central coast (Valparaíso–Maule) | 12–17 °C depending on the season |
| South (Biobío–Los Lagos) | 10–13 °C all year |
These are reference ranges: wind, swell and time of day can shift the temperature several degrees at the same spot.
Central coast by season
- Summer (Dec–Mar): the mildest water of the year.
- Autumn and spring: cold water; a hood starts to make a difference.
- Winter (Jun–Sep): the coldest water; hood recommended.
Which Kuhane wetsuit to use
| Water temperature | Wetsuit |
|---|---|
| 8–12 °C | K2H · Kuhane Two Hood: 3/2 mm with the thermal feel of a 5 mm and an integrated hood |
| 10–14 °C | K1H · Kuhane One Hood: 3/2 mm with the thermal feel of a 4/3 and an integrated hood |
| 10–14 °C | K1 · Kuhane One: the same suit, without hood |
When to wear a hood
Much of the cold is felt through the head, especially in the wind when you get out of the water. If the water is at the low end of the range, you do long sessions or you surf in winter, choose a model with an integrated hood (K2H or K1H).
FAQ
Is a 3/2 mm enough for winter in Chile? Yes, if the interior is warm: the K2H, with its Metallic interior, is made for 8–12 °C water.
How does wind affect it? Out of the water, wind makes it feel much colder. The hood also helps when you get out.
